US Youth Soccer 2009 Awards Gala

US Youth Soccer adidas Girls and Boys Recreation Coaches of the Year Named

Kansas’ Scott Howard and New Jersey’s Kristen Saccomano
honored at Awards Gala

SAN JOSE, Calif. (March 6, 2009) - The recipients of the 2008 US Youth Soccer adidas Recreation Coach of the Year award for Boys and Girls were announced tonight at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, held in conjunction with the 2009 US Youth Soccer adidas Workshop at San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, Calif. The national Recreation Coaches of the Year award winners are Scott Howard of Topeka, Kan., (Girls) and Kristen Saccomano of Edgewater, N.J., (Boys).

Hilary Kennedy, host of The US Youth Soccer Show on Fox Soccer Channel, set the stage for the night as the master of ceremonies for the more than 1,000 in attendance. Competitive Coach of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Goal and Save of the Year, Male and Female Young Referee of the Year and the Dr. Thomas Fleck Award were also presented during the Gala and the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame inductees were honored as well.

Scott Howard, of Topeka, Kan., coaches Under-6 Girls in the Sunflower Soccer Association. He believes the real winner is the one who tried their hardest, persevered and enjoyed the sport. Howard’s innate optimism makes you want to be a better person after spending time with him. He is diplomatic, easygoing, sociable and peaceable. To inspire his players, he organizes a night to watch a local university soccer team play. The team gets to the field early to get first row seats, watch the team warm up and interact with the older players. Howard also serves as treasurer on the board of trustees.

Kristen Saccomano, of Edgewater Park, N.J., teaches and coaches in Camden, N.J., a city that consistently ranks among the top most dangerous cities in the nation. Her team in the Camden Youth Soccer Club provides an outlet for the children where they learn sportsmanship, soccer skills, lessons in friendship, respect and kindness. The children Saccomano coaches exhibit camaraderie and confidence. To improve player development, Saccomano used the information she learned in the National Youth License course to make coaching packets for each age group to provide continuity in training regardless of who is coaching. She also worked on a free soccer camp for children in Camden.

Recipients of the Recreation Coach of the Year awards are selected by the US Youth Soccer Board of Directors on the basis of sportsmanship, player development, personal coaching development and community involvement (citizenship).

The regional winners of the 2008 US Youth Soccer adidas Girls' Recreation Coaches of the Year are:

Region I - Tom Garbowski, Wilmingon (Delaware Youth Soccer)
Region II - Scott Howard*, Topeka (Kansas State Youth Soccer)
Region III - Ken Hays, Cary (North Carolina Youth Soccer)

10/27/2008  9:15 AM

Every so often when a U.S. Women’s National Team plays out of the country, a player will write an e-postcard, filling in the fans back home on the happenings of the team, off field activities and anything else on their mind. As the U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team counts down the days until its 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup opener against Japan on Oct. 30, 16-year-old midfielder Mandy Laddish from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, muses on getting adjusted to the New Zealand time zone, swollen ankles, and her lack of proficiency in the French language.
