Kansas Youth Soccer Standout
Jonathan Kempin Selected for U-17 Men’s
National Team Residency Program
OLATHE, Kansas (September 9, 2008) – Jonathan Kempin, 15, member of the Kansas State Youth Soccer Association (KSYSA) Olympic Development Program (ODP) State Team and goalkeeper for Blue Valley North’s 2007 High School 6A championship team, has been selected to attend the U.S. Soccer Under-17 Men’s National Team Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida. He is the first Kansas boy to attend the prestigious program.
As a 13-year-old, while attending the Region II United States Youth Soccer ODP summer camp, Kempin was identified by scouts with the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) and attended his first National camp in Massachusetts. At 14, he became a pool player for the Under-15 USSF National Team, and by 15, he was playing for both the U-15 and U-17 National teams.
Kempin already has traveled internationally and can look forward to more similar experiences as part of the residency program. He also has been playing on the Wizard’s U-16 Academy Team in Leawood, Kansas.
U.S. Soccer’s U-17 Residency Program has 40 spots, with players from across the U.S. training and going to school year-round in Bradenton. This year, players will be competing for a place on the U.S. team that will attempt to qualify for its 14th consecutive FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2009. The U.S. players live on campus at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and train in the morning under the guidance of U.S. Soccer national staff coaches. In the afternoon, the players attend classes at nearby Bradenton Preparatory Academy.
Since its inception in 1999, nearly 200 players have been through the full-time Residency Program, many of whom have moved on to Major League Soccer, or professional leagues in Europe. Fifteen players have also registered at least one cap with the full Men’s National Team: Bobby Convey, Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, Jonathan Spector, Oguchi Onyewu, Eddie Johnson, Eddie Gaven, Santino Quaranta, Chad Marshall, Heath Pearce, Justin Mapp, Freddy Adu and Michael Bradley.
The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.
